Dr Martin Kelly, Respiratory Consultant at Altnagelvin Area Hospital, Londonderry, is lead clinician for lung cancer, TB, COPD, asthma & pulmonary rehab. He works within a small but dedicated team, providing care for patients with respiratory illness in the northern part of the Western Trust. The team also provide services in the community in partnership with GP practices and also through the Community Respiratory Team and the rapid response nursing teams. Dr Kelly is also involved in an evolving research profile at Western Trust & has been involved in a number of studies. The team are currently involved in a number of multicentre/pan-European studies looking at bronchiectasis (EMBARC & CLEAR) & acute infective respiratory illness (MERMAIDS-ARI).
The Respiratory Team was nominated by the British Lung Foundation’s (BLF) local lung support group, Breathe Easy Derry, for the ‘Outstanding Healthcare in the Community’ Breath of Fresh Air award 2011. Western Trust’s chief executive said their work had been recognised because “The Western Trust’s Respiratory Team has been at the forefront of outreach into the community helping people with respiratory illness to live and remain in their own homes.”
